Crackle: Sony’s new video site launches

Sony’s acqusition of video site Grouper last year for $65m was seen as something of a strange decision. In a hugely competitve sector, one of the largest consumer brands in the world was purchasing one of the smallest players. At the time, Grouper had a 0.48% share of the online video market. Last week though, Sony relaunched the site under the name Crackle. In its new iteration, the focus has moved from general UGC to a more structured form of a talent search. As we’re increasingly seeing in the Web 2.0 world, users are now incentivised to encourage content generation. Where Crackle differs though is that the incentives leverage Sony’s unique position as a music label and film studio (a sign that the various arms of the brand may fianlly be working in sync perhaps?). Users have the chance of pitching their ideas to top level execs at animation studios, a famous comedy production unit and even Columbia studios, and that’s in addition to thousands of dollars of prize money.

Buy Blog Comments

Us marketers are forever being accused of lacking morals or being unethical. With that in mind, the creators of this site surely challenge our beloved profession in this realm. The site allows you to buy comments for your blog (somewhat unsurprisingly) and uses a team to post from all over the world to avoid suspicion. Oh, and if this post suddenly receives hundreds of comments it’s total coincidence, OK?

Lightwriting – graffiti evolved

Check out these fantastic examples of lightwriting. The artist uses torches, glowsticks or reflectors coupled with a lengthy exposure to ‘paint’ with light.

Diesel ‘Liquid Space’ Holographic Fashion Show

I would have loved to go to Diesel’s Spring/Summer 08 catwalk show at the Pitti Immagine Uomo fair in Florence. This is a digital experience at its best.

WWF global warming: Petition

Amazing idea from BBDO Guerrero in the Philippines. Blank petitions in support of the Renewable Energy Bill were inserted into plastic wrapped magazines, complete with a red pen that served as a thermometer. The public was then urged to gather more signatures, send them back to WWF and help reduce global warming. Each time the pen was used the ink inside the pen decreased making it look like the temperature was going down.

Sony gets their PlayStation marketing right

Isn’t it frustrating when all you want to do is play videogames at work or school but those darned teachers and bosses won’t let you? Well after several marketing slip-ups, Sony has created this lovely piece for their PSP. Simply hide your console behind this cut-out version of Dante’s ‘Divine Comedy’, complete with hands. It even has crib notes on the back should your authority figure of become suspicious of the extreme pleasure you appear to be taking from the read.
