Recognizr: social facial recognition

A next logical step in the ensuing construction of the semantic web, Recognizer is a (currently) Android only app that , upon pointing your (android device of choice’s) camera at another persons face, informs you just exactly who they are. Now here’s the cool part – as soon as this happens, a series of augmented reality spinning icons appear in midair around the subject’s face -  each one a link to a social networking service that they’ve signed up for – and simply pressing one of them immediately takes you to their profile page (security settings notwithstanding). As of right now, it’s only working with people who’ve signed up with the Recognizr application, but it’s easy to imagine a future where adding contacts to all your social media sites is as simple as pointing and clicking.

Peugeot RCZ turns the campaign model on its head

We were recently tasked by Peugeot with generating buzz around the launch of their new sports coupé, the RCZ. The car itself is a highly significant launch for Peugeot and deserved a campaign equally as unique and exciting. Our idea was as follows:

Today, Facebook takes over the internet

Earlier this week I wrote an article about the fact that Facebook has begun to take over peoples’ lives online. You can read it via Figaro Digital here. Now far be it for me to suggest that i’m some kind of genius psychic but today has seen Facebook launch a roster of new features that extend their reach well beyond Facebook.com. You know that already on a lot of sites there’s a little Facebook icon that lets you post items into your newsfeed for your friends to view? And you know that you can ‘like’ your Facebook friends’ photos and comments? Well Facebook is supercharging that functionality to let you potentially ‘like’ almost any piece of content on the web (as long as the site chucks those little thumbs up buttons in there). When you click on the ‘like’ button you’ll also immediately be told which of your friends have also ‘liked’ it.

Farmville overtakes Twitter, great for brands

If recent stats are to be believed that is. The Facebook-based farming community now has 80 million users, 30 million of whom interact daily. No seriously, that’s not a typo. Let’s put that into perspective: - Twitter, according to the most recently available data, has 75 million users. Only 17% of these users will have Tweeted in the past month.

Google Buzz arrives, confuses us all slightly

Google Buzz launched yesterday among a fair bit of fanfare in the realm of social media. It’s available immediately to any Gmail users and lets you share status updates, photos, videos and links with your friends or the wider public. So far, so Facebook.  In fact we struggled for a long while to work out exactly how Buzz differed from a very basic version of Facebook. There are several features borrowed from Twitter too – following people and @ replies for example.

Authenticity and Social Media

Authenticity is saying what you mean and meaning what you say. With the surge of growing social media tools, individuals are sharing a larger amount of information at shorter intervals. In making so much personal information and experience quasi-public, how does the practice affect the authenticity of both our in-person and web 2.0 communications? Are we telling people what we really want to say, and do we mean it? If so, what are the consequences?

Bill Gates joins Twitter, gains close to 150,000 followers in 12 hours

There was a short period of time last night when this blogger was more popular than Bill Gates. That period of time lasted approximately one minute. Yes folks, the world’s richest man has joined Twitter. His rise has been pretty extraordinary – it took him mere minutes to rise from 400 to 4,000 followers. And as of writing he is rising by approximately 10,000 followers an hour.

The 100 most social brands of 2009

Mashable has today published a list of the 100 most social brands of the past year based on information fromVitrue’s Social Media Index. Brands are ranked by the number of consumer comments & reactions rather than activity from the brand itself meaning the title is a little misleading but it makes for an interesting read nonetheless.
