Facebook closes Burger King’s Whopper Sacrifice App

For those of you who didn’t see it, Burger King (via their agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky) launched a Facebook app at the beginning of this year offering a free Whopper to anyone who ’sacrificed’ 10 of their friends by deleting them. The best bit was, if you’d been sacrificed an alert would appear in your newsfeed, letting you know that you now ex-friend valued a burger more than your virtual friendship.

Facebook gets sweet

Apologies for the generic image here but Googling ‘Facebook sweet’ didn’t quite bring up the types of images we were searching for. So, a new Facebook app allows its users to send each other real life chocolate bars. The Mars branded ‘celebrate’ app lets users select a friend and type of sweets to send then pay via gift tokens on their PayPal account. The recipient receives a message in their Facebook inbox asking for their mobile number which is used to send them a voucher via SMS. This can then be redeemed at PayPoint retailers.

Facebook apps or ‘why this blogger finally caved in and registered’

Last Thursday, Facebook opened up their platform to developers by allowing them to create applications that users can display on their pages. In some senses similar to traditional desktop widgets, Facebook apps differ in that they’re not reserved for your personal consumption – anyone visiting your profile can check them out. Users of MySpace have been using similar toys for some time now and inserting them via strings of code. However, the large proportion of hideous or just plain broken MySpace pages is testament to the fact that giving web novices such a deep level of access to the functioning of their profiles isn’t neccessarily a good idea.
