Facebook Deals launched

Want to access nearby Facebook Deals using your web browser? Now you can, thanks to Facebook’s new “Find Deals on Facebook” page. The page, which was launched last week, enables users to find local deals on a map, just as they would using Facebook’s official iPhone or Android apps, or by accessing touch.facebook.com on their mobile phones. Users can also browse deals in other neighborhoods via search.

ASOS launches fully stocked shop on Facebook

ASOS, the online women’s clothing store, is set to become one of the first retailers to make their entire range available within the social network. The application, to launch at the end of January, will be one of the first to allow people to buy directly from a brand without leaving Facebook.

Today, Facebook takes over the internet

Earlier this week I wrote an article about the fact that Facebook has begun to take over peoples’ lives online. You can read it via Figaro Digital here. Now far be it for me to suggest that i’m some kind of genius psychic but today has seen Facebook launch a roster of new features that extend their reach well beyond Facebook.com. You know that already on a lot of sites there’s a little Facebook icon that lets you post items into your newsfeed for your friends to view? And you know that you can ‘like’ your Facebook friends’ photos and comments? Well Facebook is supercharging that functionality to let you potentially ‘like’ almost any piece of content on the web (as long as the site chucks those little thumbs up buttons in there). When you click on the ‘like’ button you’ll also immediately be told which of your friends have also ‘liked’ it.

Farmville overtakes Twitter, great for brands

If recent stats are to be believed that is. The Facebook-based farming community now has 80 million users, 30 million of whom interact daily. No seriously, that’s not a typo. Let’s put that into perspective: - Twitter, according to the most recently available data, has 75 million users. Only 17% of these users will have Tweeted in the past month.

Facebook’s weekly US traffic overtakes Google’s

As if there wasn’t already enough evidence that Facebook is slowly take over the internet, reports emerging this week suggest that for the first time, the amount of weekly traffic heading to Facebook is higher than that of Google in the US.

Google Buzz arrives, confuses us all slightly

Google Buzz launched yesterday among a fair bit of fanfare in the realm of social media. It’s available immediately to any Gmail users and lets you share status updates, photos, videos and links with your friends or the wider public. So far, so Facebook.  In fact we struggled for a long while to work out exactly how Buzz differed from a very basic version of Facebook. There are several features borrowed from Twitter too – following people and @ replies for example.

Authenticity and Social Media

Authenticity is saying what you mean and meaning what you say. With the surge of growing social media tools, individuals are sharing a larger amount of information at shorter intervals. In making so much personal information and experience quasi-public, how does the practice affect the authenticity of both our in-person and web 2.0 communications? Are we telling people what we really want to say, and do we mean it? If so, what are the consequences?

Facebook makes a U-Turn

During this morning’s routine check of facebook we were presented with this message: “Over the past few days, we have received a lot of feedback about the new terms we posted two weeks ago. Because of this response, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised. For more information, visit the Facebook Blog.”

Spotted: facebook integration in banner ads

No strangers to using facebook to its full potential, O2 are once again pushing the boundaries. This banner ad was spotted on the Daily Mail’s newly revamped site. What caught our interest was the little ‘post to facebook’ call to action at the bottom.

Facebook chat leaked on the internets

Facebook is set to launch instant messaging functionality on the social network in the next couple of weeks. Users can set status in a similar manner to MSN Messenger and browse lists of all their online friends. As we’ve come to expect from Facebook, usability looks top notch – users can continue to browse the rest of the site without closing the chat window or if they wish, launch in a separate pop up. Check out the video for a decent (if slightly shaky) demonstration.
