Crackle: Sony’s new video site launches
Sony’s acqusition of video site Grouper last year for $65m was seen as something of a strange decision. In a hugely competitve sector, one of the largest consumer brands in the world was purchasing one of the smallest players. At the time, Grouper had a 0.48% share of the online video market. Last week though, Sony relaunched the site under the name Crackle. In its new iteration, the focus has moved from general UGC to a more structured form of a talent search. As we’re increasingly seeing in the Web 2.0 world, users are now incentivised to encourage content generation. Where Crackle differs though is that the incentives leverage Sony’s unique position as a music label and film studio (a sign that the various arms of the brand may fianlly be working in sync perhaps?). Users have the chance of pitching their ideas to top level execs at animation studios, a famous comedy production unit and even Columbia studios, and that’s in addition to thousands of dollars of prize money.Posted July 17, 2007 10:42 am by Alex Horner 0 Comments

Speech recognition to improve video ad targeting
London based online video specialists, blinkx are readying a potentially revolutionary new ad platform called AdHoc. The platform will allow advertisers to target their ads (either embedded within or alongside the video) based on the aural content of the video itself – think of it as Google’s AdSense but based on speech rather than text. We dread to think what kinds of results we’ll see from sex education videosPosted June 25, 2007 4:59 pm by Alex Horner 0 Comments
